R1.7bn allocated to MyCiTi service in Cape Town’s draft budget; R1.9bn for road maintenance
The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate’s proposed operational budget for the financial year, starting July 1, is more than R4.7-billion, which includes R1.7-billion for operating the MyCiTi bus service.
Regular and ongoing road maintenance is also a priority, says Urban Mobility MMC Rob Quintas.
“We have allocated over R1.9-billion from our operational budget for the 2026/27 financial year to road maintenance.”
The R1.9-billion number is roughly R200-million less than last financial year’s road maintenance budget.
“We have allocated a substantial sum over the next three years for implementing universally accessible walking and cycle lanes across the city,” adds Quintas.
“According to our latest Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan, up to 9% of commuters walk and cycle to their destinations.”
The Urban Mobility Directorate’s capital budget over the medium term, starting on July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2029, amounts to more than R6-billion.
Within this budget, R3.3-billion has been allocated for the roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service to connect Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha with Wynberg and Claremont, with another R301-million to be spend on the upgrading of public transport interchanges in Bellville, Wynberg, Macassar, Makhaza, Mfuleni, Nonkqubela, Vuyani, and the inner-city.
Just short of R380-million have been allocated to upgrading the Nyanga and Nolungile public transport precincts; with R524-million to be spent on new MyCiTi buses and the refurbishment of the existing fleet.
Roughly R606-million have also been allocated for road projects to relieve traffic congestion at pressure points in Belhar (Erica drive), Salt River (Voortrekker road), along the M3 highway and Maitland (Berkley road), with R114-million to be spent on universally accessible footways and cycle lanes in Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Kensington, Maitland and Gugulethu, among others.
The city also plans to spend R492-million on road rehabilitation or reconstruction, including the reconstruction of various roads in Manenberg; the rehabilitation of Oliver Tambo drive and Spine road; road rehabilitation in Bonteheuwel and Uitsig, and at La Belle road between Strand street and Willow street in Stikland; and the upgrade of Voortrekker road from the Salt River Circle to Jakes Gerwel drive.
“Our proposed budget priorities for the next three financial years demonstrates our intention to keep people, goods and services moving,” says Quintas.
“This is why we are setting aside billions to create new infrastructure for those who rely on public transport; building new roads or widening the ones we have; and adding new universally accessible footways and cycle lanes for those who cannot afford other means of transport.”
